AcWriMo

You may have heard that every November writers across the world gather for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), but have you heard of its cousin, AcWriMo (Academic Writing Month)? This year, PGRH is creating a home for the annual “academic write-a-thon” for all things goal-setting, coworking and putting some good work into that project that’s been languishing on the back burner. Read on to see what’s happening!

How It All Works

If you’re not already a member of PGRH, come join the server! To keep the spam bots away, you will need to post three times in order to gain full access to the server:

1. #introduce-yourself — Post a quick hello so we know to say hi!
2. #researcher-profiles — Add your research interests, ongoing projects and any other details you want to share.
3. #scholars-lounge — Ask anyone questions you have, or let us know that you’ve joined for the AcWriMo festivities!

Decide on your writing goal. Unlike NaNoWriMo which typically asks its participants to commit to 50,000 words in a month, AcWriMo acknowledges that academic projects aren’t always best measured by word count! You could instead articulate your goal in terms of hours or projects, but what’s most important is that it’s specific and measurable. Once you’ve articulated your goal, post it in the #acwrimo-2024 channel and it will be pinned for all to see!

From the 1st of November, you can get involved in our various server events (calendar below) that will be specially themed to support your writing for the month!

We’ve also installed the Writer Stats bot to help track both your individual writing and the collective writing of the whole server! To learn how to use it, go to #writing-bots and use the /guide command.

Discussion boards and coworking rooms will be ongoing for the month, with organised events on Mondays and Thursdays. You can also bring the conversation to your social media spheres using the hashtag #AcWriMo.

At the end of the month, you’ll be prompted to share how it went, reflect on what you want to improve, and think about the next steps for your writing project!
